A different perspective on XMAS

December 01, 20242 min read

If you enjoy the season, that is great, I do too just in a slightly unusual way.

From my perspective, Christmas has become a holiday filled with expectations that I don't want. It used to be a Christian religious holiday, but now it is all about consumerism and spending money on excessive food and unwanted items. I understand that this may come across as cynical, but I would rather spend genuine quality time with my family and friends throughout the year, not just during Christmas. This viewpoint has been with me since my teenage years when I started to feel disconnected from the traditional winter festivities as an Australian experiencing summer at that time. Additionally, I dislike the pressure and advertising that tells me how I should feel and what I should be doing during this time of year.

By not participating in the commercialized version of Christmas, I can remove myself from unnecessary stress and focus on other possibilities. In my household, my husband and I decided to minimize spending and expectations during Christmas and instead prioritize birthdays. As our children grew older, we began to establish our own 'summer traditions' that didn't cause significant stress or strain on our finances. This approach allows us to have relaxed Christmas days, where we can simply unwind and enjoy each other's company without overindulging in food or alcohol.

One of the traditions is going to the beach on the longest day of the year. My second child and one of my close friends join me, we watch the sunrise, meditate, and reflect on the positive aspects of life. When we return home, we have a special breakfast and exchange small gifts. Depending on the day of the week, we either continue with our regular activities or take the day to relax. This year, as it falls on a Friday, we are also hosting a barbecue with our friends before they head off to their own family obligations.

So, to all those who enjoy the holiday season, I wish you a joyful and festive time. And for those who may not share the same enthusiasm, I hope my perspective can inspire you to consider other possibilities and have a peaceful and laid-back time.

Be you everyone else is taken

Love Tracey
